Motivated (From Unlikely Places)
"Motivated: From Unlikely Places," is a short film that I had shot on the day of the 2020 Academy Awards ceremony.
This is not my first time, taking on all the roles, but still a great learning experience.
This film is filled with objects from my career as a filmmaker. If you are familiar with my films, you should be able to spot them?
Most importantly, I have wanted to make a film where I would be able to be open and carefree, about my body. I don't have a perfect body, teeth, hair, or in other words, I do not have that "Hollywood," look. What I am, is untraditional, but still beautiful.
I wanted to make a film, sharing my untraditional looks, in hopes that others will be inspired to look beyond the "perfect look," in the casting rooms, and beyond.
My Mother, Sherri Brown, passed away from breast cancer. I was old enough to know her, but not old enough to realize her lessons, she was trying to teach me before she passed. As I get older, I understand more and more.
This movie is dedicated to her, as I know she has been with me, guiding me for much of this journey, on becoming one of the next, greatest, storytellers of modern-day cinema. She is my motivation, among other things, and other people, such as my Dad.
I love my looks, untraditional as they may be. They are a gift from my Mother, and they make up who I am.
I am a strong, beautiful, talented, and motived, black, Queen.
